The Signs of Flea and Tick Infestation

Fleas and ticks might be tiny, but they can wreak a significant amount of havoc in your home and your life. Early intervention can be vital in limiting the damage.

Here are some indicators that you may have a flea or tick problem:

  • Pet scratching and biting: These pesky parasites cause discomfort and irritation to animals, leading to incessant scratching, hair loss, and skin infections.
  • Tick embedding: Ticks attach themselves firmly to the skin and feed on blood.
  • Flea dirt and eggs: Fleas leave behind small, dark reddish-brown or black specks known as flea dirt. Their eggs are tiny white ovals. You may find them on your pet's fur or coat, your bedding, or in carpeted areas.

There’s also the most obvious sign of all—directly finding fleas or ticks when you inspect your pet. Look for small, dark brown insects that move quickly (fleas) or flat, oval-shaped arachnids that latch onto the skin (ticks). Pay extra attention to areas like the neck, ears, belly, and tail, as these are common hotspots for flea and tick infestations.

The Risk to People

Here are some potential dangers associated with flea and tick infestations:

  • Flea bites: Fleas can bite humans, causing itchy, red bumps that may appear in clusters on the lower legs, ankles, and feet. The result can be allergic reactions, skin infections, and more.
  • Tick-borne diseases: Ticks are notorious carriers of various diseases, such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and ehrlichiosis.
  • Secondary infections: Scratching flea bites or improperly removing ticks can introduce bacteria into the skin, leading to secondary infections. Skin infections can cause further pain and scarring.
  • Allergic reactions: Symptoms can include intense itching, swelling, hives, and difficulty breathing.

The Risk to Pets

Pets are particularly vulnerable to the dangers posed by fleas and ticks. These pests can cause significant health problems and discomfort for our furry companions.

The risk to our pets includes—but is not limited to—these:

  • Skin irritation: Fleas and ticks cause intense itching and irritation in pets, leading to excessive scratching, biting, and licking. Constant scratching can result in broken skin, hot spots, and infections.
  • Anemia: Fleas are blood-feeding parasites that can cause anemia in severe infestations. Anemia occurs when the number of red blood cells decreases, leading to fatigue, weakness, pale gums, and decreased appetite. Puppies and kittens are particularly susceptible to flea-induced anemia.
  • Transmission of parasites: Fleas can transmit tapeworms to pets. This can lead to digestive issues, weight loss, and a general decline in your pet’s overall health.
  • Behavioral changes: Pets infested with fleas or ticks may exhibit changes in behavior. They may become restless and agitated and have difficulty sleeping due to constant itching and discomfort.
